Cuenca - Una Ciudad Extraordinaria

Cuenca es una ciudad en el central del sur de Ecuador, alto en los Andes a una altitud de 2.700 metros. Está un Unesco sitio de Patrimonio Mundial, y, si, está una bonita ciudad con fabulosos edificios, pero está mucho más que eso.

En el principio lugar, Cuenca tiene muchos hermosos iglesias, y el más impresionante es el Catedral Nuevo. Sin embargo, hay muchos otras iglesias en el centro, y otros edificios bonitos.

Hay otras iglesias hermosas, también, como la catedral vieja, 

 

y la iglesia Turi, en el mirador de Turi. 

Las restaurantes en Cuenca son muy bueno, también. Hay muchos restaurantes pequeños que sirven almuerzos muy baratos. Para solo $1.75 U.S. puede tener un almuerzo completo, con sopa, jugo, ensalada, un plato fuerte con pollo, carne de res, o puerco, arroz, frijoles, y un postre.

Además, hay unos restaurantes vegetarianos excelentes, y mi favorito es la Restaurante Vegetariano en la Plaza San Blas. Me encanta la ensalada de frutas sencilla.

Cuenca es una ciudad muy interesante, también, con mercados, artistas en las calles, y muchos flores bonita.























Hay muchos lugares interesantes cerca de la ciudad también, como el Amaru Zoológico. Este lugar tiene muchos animales en una reserva naturaleza. Tiene animales de América del Sur y otra partes del mundo.

Me encanté la reserva del pájaros porque pude caminar adentro del reserva y vine cerca de los pájaros.









Adémas, los monos pequeños estaban libre de sus jaulas y estaban muy lindas.









Hay animales exóticos también, como estés leones.



Cuando estuve allí, estaba a la una, hora de la comida para los leones y ¡estaba fascinante! El papa leone no quería compartir su comida con los bebes y de vez en cuando haría una gran ruido. ¡Todas las personas saltarían! Estaba muy cómico.
Sin embargo, el zoológico  es muy burdo y no toda gente que le va a gusta para caminar.





El Parque Nacional Cajas es una otro lugar cerca de Cuenca que es muy interesante. El parque es alto en los Andes y hay muchos kilómetros de senderos, muchos lagos, y plantas bonitas. Sin embargo, porque está alto en las montañas, es frío.





En la ciudad, hay otros lugares interesantes también, como El Museo Banco Central que tiene
pantallas de la vida pre-hispana en la area.



Y Pumapungo tiene ruinas de una pueblo Mayan.



Si, Cuenca es una ciudad extraordinario. Es una ciudad patrimonio de la Humanidad por los edificios al centro histórico, pero además tiene interesante gente y lugares cerca de la ciudad. Espero que pueda visitar otra vez en el futuro.

Gaggles of Canada Geese at Neck Pt.

Today I had a really cool experience. I was ambling around Neck Pt. this morning with my dog Chica, and I only took my little point-and-shoot because I didn't want to go too crazy with the photos. I came to the point overlooking Sunset Beach and sat down, hoping to get a shot of a gull gliding. I sat and waited, and waited, and then around the corner came two gaggles of geese, with 23 goslings! The first ones I'd seen this year.




I had the camera on rapid fire, and just kept shooting, and as they got around the corner an otter suddenly surfaced in front of them, and the parents quickly "circled the wagons,"



 and at first headed for the safety of some rocks,



but these proved too small for the whole group, so they headed to shore



where the adults stood guard.



Then, after about a minute, they headed off on their way, safely it seemed, at least for the time being.

The whole event took less than four minutes. A lot of activity for that short of a time!

Keeha Bay Backpacking Experience - May 13-15, 2016

   




Ah, Keeha Bay, one of my favourite destinations on the Island, and this year it didn't disappoint. Whales in the bay, eagles aloft, bears scrounging along the shore, seals afloat, sea caves, shell fish, flowers, lichen, fungi . . . . Oh, this area is teeming with life!

After driving for almost two hours on the logging road from Port Alberni, we were glad when we neared Bamfield and the trailhead for the Keeha Bay Trail.

Although the trail was not a swamp this year, as in past years, it was still wet in places!















And, the trail is still very rooty too!



But, there has been a lot of new board walk constructed, and this made the going much easier. Beautiful boardwalk, too, made of huge planks of cedar.































I love the forest through here. A multitude of fascinating cedars, dead and alive:

But of course, Keeha Bay is more about the beach and shore-line. After our  3-hour hike in on Friday, we set up camp beside the creek. There were a few others there; first time I've seen anyone else camped there. We had sunny weather hiking in, but it clouded over Friday evening, treating us to a nice, but not spectacular, sunset:






We awoke Saturday morning to heavy overcast, and with low tide at 2 p.m., we weren't in a hurry to get going. Se we spent a leisurely morning watching whales and eagles. (Although whenever I neared the whales they stopped showboating. Lisa got a lot better photos with her iPhone than I did with my camera!)





And then about 10 a.m. we started off along the beach.



And soon the sand turned into rock, and we scrambled up and down and across the rocks:









with ample tidal pools, interesting sea life, caves and cliffs:

And we saw a bear, from a comfortable distance, but part of our group had a close encounter with two full-grown bears that came charging towards them before finally spotting the humans and retreating.
